Winchester WWB115 JHP, WWB 147 JHP, Silvertip 115 JHP,
Ranger 147 JHP, and WWB 115 FMJ

So - two weights of White Box JHP defence ammo, Win Rangers, the Win Silvertips, and finally a re-run on White Box std FMJ. Having done ten shot strings and wanting to keep same format as previous, I will''double up'' with the entries in tables below in the row showing String Velocities - also rounding up or down with decimal components of chrono readout.

As before, the figure for muzzle energy is formulated by using the average velocity from chrono readings.

First - the WWB 115 JHP .....

Quite a large spread ..... and not an over impressive energy figure. The last shot of the string was a partial FTE .. in as much as, the case was just held in the ejection port thus halting slide closure.. Clearance was very quick and simple. Expansion Test .

Next is the WWB 147 JHP .....

Surprising here how close the velocities are to the 115 grain version . and yet we have a significantly heavier bullet. As a result, the energy figure goes up nicely. Having said that - it will be noticed that the wetpack tests show little obvious difference between the two weights, which is a little surprising. Expansion Test.

Shots #2 and #4 were FTF's .... the rounds did not lift enough it seemed to get onto feed ramp at suitable angle and so jammed. It is interesting to note that the WWB JHP rounds have quite short OAL's .. around 1.09", as compared with 1.125" for Gold Dots and Blazers. Maybe the slightly shorter round allows for slide forward travel to be too far advanced, before round ready to strip off mag' and so cannot ''climb'' the ramp. Not sure as yet.

Now we move on to new ground for me ...... the Silvertips ........

Apparent useful velocity figures, and a very impressively low spread figure along with good SD. This brings ME figure up to an acceptable level. This however needs to be seen against bullet performance which can be seen in the section on expansion tests.

More new ground ...... the Rangers ........

Not over impressive velocity figures and so also not in my view a very useful energy figure. This was another example where expansion tests showed some strange results.

For a lower priced ammo this is quite acceptable. The first test I did on these originally however had the chrono somewhat closer to the gun - thus higher figures in that case. I have since tried to maintain a distance of about 6 feet.

None of this defensive ammo from Winchester made me want to rush out and buy more! It was either slightly unreliable regarding function in the gun or, bullet expansion characteristics seemed far from ideal - from this gun.

Having said that, the WWB FMJ is adequate as a practice round even if as some people find, there are occasional malfunctions - not something that has given me any trouble in my gun however.

You may next like to look at Chrono Data - CCI Blazer ....... or the expansion tests.
